Signs and road markings.
Must slow down &/or stop and give way to other vehicles/pedestrians.
Must not cause other vehicles to alter speed or diverge.
When you come to a GIVE WAY sign you must slow down and be prepared to stop if necessary.
A GIVE WAY sign or line means you must give way to all vehicles travelling in, entering or approaching the intersection whether vehicles are turning left or right, or going straight ahead.
You must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road into which you are turning.
When you come to a STOP sign you must stop completely before reaching the line.
When there is no STOP line stop before reaching, and as close as possible to the intersection (imagine a line from kerb to kerb).
If necessary to stop more than one metre from STOP line then must stop again before reaching the line.
You must give way to all vehicles travelling in, entering or approaching the intersection whether vehicles are turning left or right, or going straight ahead.
You must give way to any pedestrians crossing the road into which you are turning.
At T intersections the vehicle travelling on the road that ends must give way to any pedestrians crossing or vehicles travelling on the road that continues unless otherwise stated. This situation is treated as a GIVE WAY sign.

You must stay in the same lane as you go from one road to another.
Approach any intersection at a speed that lets you give way to all vehicles in or approaching the intersection if there’s a danger of a collision.

1. When following behind another vehicle a three second gap is the minimum safe distance to maintain crash avoidance space to the front of your vehicle, this must be increased in poor conditions or when you are being followed too closely by another vehicle.
2. When following another vehicle as the rear of the vehicle passes a stationary object at the side of the road such as a power pole, tree or sign start a three second count ‘one thousand and one, one thousand and two, one thousand and three’ if your vehicle passes the object before you finish counting you are following too closely.
3. When stopping behind another vehicle in traffic stop approximately one to two car lengths from the vehicle, wait until the vehicle or two behind you has stopped then slowly move forward until you can just see the rear wheels of the vehicle over the bonnet of your vehicle.
4. Reduce speed When vision is limited (crests and curves) & When it is not possible to create space (buffer) from parked or oncoming cars.

1. Allow at least one to two meters from the side of parked vehicles where possible so as to avoid hitting any opening doors or pedestrians, if unable to keep this space you must slow down.
2. Always keep to the left, where possible you should be at least one meter from the center line particularly on crest and curves, if unable to keep this space you must slow down.
3. You should always avoid driving in other peoples blind spots. If you are unable to see the face of the driver of the other vehicle in their exterior mirrors then that person is unable to see you.

A safe gap is one in which you do not cause other drivers to slow down or move to avoid you.
- Be clear of the intersection for three seconds before other vehicles arrive.
- Choose a safe gap so other vehicles are not forced to change speed.
- When joining a traffic stream select a gap that allows you reach the traffic speed before the approaching vehicles are within three seconds of your vehicle.
Remember one look is never enough.
- Make sure to check both directions.
- When you are crossing traffic you should clear its path with plenty of time to spare (at least three seconds)
